Question 1

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

Question 3

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

Transcript

Audience feedback is essential to ensure that our media products will appeal to our target audience.

We created a target audience profile to address viewers directly and make sure that our media were relevant. These “invisible fictions of the audience”, as theorised by John Hartley, were built upon by feedback from members of our target audience groups.

After our trailer rough cut was produced, we surveyed those from our intended demographic to see which sections of our trailer were effective and which needed improvement. It was suggested that the sound of the camera flashes during the Prime Minister’s address should be muted when the prime minister is not on screen to enforce the distinction between locations and characters. This section was also commented upon in relation to the cross-cutting between the scenes of the Prime Minister and protagonist. More cuts between these images was recommended to show the link between these characters and to conform to the conventions of film trailers, which are commonly filled with fast-paced cuts.

In addition to this, I also sought comments on my poster, magazine cover and website throughout their development to confirm that the target audience would be attracted to and engage with these media. The colours were addressed and some layout concerns were acted upon so that the products carried out their tasks to the highest possible standard.

As the target audience had been merely imagined, feedback ensures that the project has the correct focus. This is because audiences may not react to a product in the expected manner, which could majorly damage the reputation of the companies involved. Therefore, to reach a larger source, I posted images and videos on our production company’s social media pages. This meant that our posts reached much larger audiences through the two-step flow, and constructive comments left could be read and acted upon.

Without this audience feedback, our film may have not attracted or retained those for which it was produced, and would therefore be unfit for purpose.
